One of the many wonderful changes at Bromley East Charter School this year is the addition of a literacy block in fifth and sixth grade. The sixth grade students meet everyday with their homeroom teachers for ninety minutes of reading and writing focus time. Below is a brief outline of the literacy block. If you have any questions regarding the literacy block please email me at amarkwardt@bromleyeastcs.org.
Fluency- Students work to improve the flow of their reading
Shared Reading- Teacher models reading and reading strategies
Guided Reading- Students work in small groups to practice reading and reading strategies introduced in shared reading or by the teacher
Word Work- Students explore idioms, Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes
Independent Reading- Students read for enjoyment
Homework: Students will be asked to read for thirty minutes at home each evening from a book, magazine or news source of their choice. They will be responsible for recording their progress in a reading log.
